The ever changing training schedule

Many people have asked me which "training program" I'm following for this marathon training ... My answer: Well, I've kinda arranged my own training schedule. (Sounds like a novice answer, right?) After reading and researching many different training schedules (Runner's World, Jeff Galloway's method, Marathon training for Women, Marathon Training for Non-Runners), I tried to implement a few of them but with my work schedule nothing really worked :( ... I'm very determined to properly train and NOT use work as an excuse, so I think I FINALLY figured out something to give me a balance and not over exhaust and stress myself.

My personal goal of the NWM is to cross the finish line standing and hopefully with a smile on my face. It would be nice to complete the daunting 26.2 miles in a respectable time :) I'm focusing my training to build endurance, mental strength, and stamina. Maybe for my second marathon (I'm being VERY optimistic) I'll take the interval runs more seriously to work on the speed element. As of now I'm content and feeling good with 2 maintenance runs (6 miles/4 miles) and a yoga class on the weekdays followed by a long run on the weekend. Sometimes, I try to add in some weights w/ a good leg workout during the week too. So far, this is the best combo for me and I don't feel burnt out - no matter how busy my work schedule!

There have been days this past month where I've been exhausted thinking about running and working out. Gazing at the running schedule made me wanna go sit in front of the TV and eat ice cream. I admit, I took a few more off days than I would have liked :( ... There have been times I questioned myself: WHY ON EARTH did I sign up for this?! BUT,  after a 2 week runner's rut I'm back in a groove w/ this newly tailored schedule! Maybe I can have the best running program regimen to run a 4:30 marathon, but I've learned that it's not about the time posted at the finish line. This may sound very cliche - but it's not about the destination, but the journey ... I've always been someone who followed the rules and instructions. Most of the time things had to be black and white. So naturally following a pre-planned training program was what I wanted to achieve. But, I learned quickly something had to give and I ended up in the gray w/ my own plan (give or take a few miles). Sometimes being in the gray isn't so bad :)
